Spryo Drone Sets Flight Across The US
Video game fans will be familiar with the character Spyro the dragon, and those living in the USA have the fortune of being able to see the purple creature flying through the sky over the next few weeks.
This is because creators have designed a drone to look like Spyro the Dragon to help advertise the new game, Reignited Trilogy, which is set to launch later this month (November 13th).
The mascot will fly across North America to famous landmarks that feature in the video game itself, enabling as many fans to get a look at it while it embarks on this epic adventure.
Michelle Fonseca, senior product and marketing director at Activision, the publisher behind Spyro, said: “We can’t wait for fans to see this awesome fire-breathing and talking Sypro drone and encourage everyone to have their phones ready to catch Spyro on his journey.”
It will take off at ‘Stone Hill’ in New York, before travelling on to West Virginia, Tennessee, Missouri, Colorado, Utah and California. Within these states, it will stop in areas that look like the game’s destinations, such as ‘Spooky Swamp’, ‘Icey Peak’ and ‘Peace Keepers’.
As well as simply flying around, the dragon is able to say dialogue from the game and shoot flames from its mouth. Of course, like the majority of drones, it features a camera on board, so people can watch what is happening below Spyro as he flies through the sky.
They will be able to catch this footage on Spyro’s official Twitter account, SpyroTheDragon, as well as its Instagram profile, allowing them to follow his adventure through the States.
One surprising star that will certainly be on social media over the next few weeks is rapper Snoop Dogg. The self-proclaimed fan even requested the dragon brings him a copy of Reignited Trilogy before it is released to the public.
Taking to Twitter, SnoopDoog said: “Yooo my lil neffew @SpyroTheDragon lookin straight !! Bring me that new Spyro Reignited Trilogy! #Spyro_Partner #SpyroToSnoop [sic].”
The game character quickly responded to the request, saying: “Hang tight @SnoopDogg I’m coming. NYC To LA. #SpyroToSnoop #SpyroDrone [sic].”
This is one of the most innovative ways a business has chosen to advertise a new product or service, but it could be the start of a new marketing strategy among other companies, not just in the video game industry.
Publisher Activision decided to launch Spyro the Dragon drone to really build up interest in the new game prior to its launch in a couple of weeks.
By getting Snoop Dogg on board, they are able to further promote the initiative, helping to raise awareness of the release not just to their social media followers but also the rappers’.
Speaking with Newsweek.com, Ms Fonseca added: “As fellow enduring icons each known for their quick wit and one-liners, we knew that fans who grew up enjoying both Snoop and Spyro would appreciate the connection.”
